Specific and Authentic Feedback Guidelines

1) The purpose is to motivate, engage, and encourage others in the revising process.
2) Create a positive environment through authentic feedback.
3) Understand that no paper is perfect and the writer is rarely satisfied.
4) Revising is focused on content and content only. Do not worry about grammar, conventions and mechanics.

PRAISE
Give positive feedback that affirms and connects to the text.

Affirmations: giving support to useful, meaningful, and effective content

Connections: demonstrate points of personal connection

QUESTION
Point out areas of concern through questions allowing the reader to make his or her own decisions.

Adding Information: ask questions that pertain to what you want to know more about

Clarifying Information: ask questions that pertain to what you need to know in order to better understand

Deleting Information: ask questions that pertain to identifying the focus

ADVICE
Recommend at the most three areas of further direction

Push: suggest ways the author can go beyond what is already stated

Explore: suggest other avenues or approached the author may want to consider

Direction: suggest strategies or tools that may be useful in obtaining your recommendations
